Basic White Bread

May 5, 2014
Making bread at home makes me feel a little cool.

Also, loaves of bread in California are like 100 million dollars each, so if I make it at home then I figure we come out way ahead. I know… that seems a little excessive to me too.

Also, it makes my house smell amazing, and Mr. T loves walking into the house from work and smelling freshly baked bread. It keeps the spark alive.

Also, it tastes amazing but I don’t have to tell you that.

Also, it’s really not that hard. Pinky swear. If you’ve never made bread before, this is a good place to start!

Super basic white bread recipe perfect for sandwiches!

You get two whole loaves from this recipe. Wrap one up in plastic wrap and throw it in the freezer until you get through the first one and you’ve got yourself another fresh loaf of bread that isn’t even moldy or nothin’!

Because ain’t nobody got time for moldy bread.

  12. Basic White Bread
Ingredients
  1. 2 cups warm water (110° F)
  2. 1/3 cup white sugar
  3. 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  4. 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  5. ¼ cup vegetable oil
  6. 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Stir in yeast and allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam. Mix salt and oil into the yeast and then flour one cup at a time until dough pulls away from bottom and sides of bowl. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  2. Punch down dough, and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place in two well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise until dough has risen 1 inch above edges of pan, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.

This is the perfect sandwich bread.

Although it wasn’t too shabby warm out of the oven with some butter slathered on top, either.

I definitely was not complaining when that happened.

How long should the water sugar and yeast proof?

Hey there Jazmin! I let the sugar and yeast and water sit for about five minutes. By that time, the yeast mixture should look nice and frothy. Let me know if you have any other questions!
